An FUE Hair Transplant is a method where the medical team extract the hair follicles one by one from the donor area. A hair follicle is a sheath of cells and connective tissue which surround the root of the hair. The donor area is located at the rear of the head. In the donor area hair follicles are more resistant to the factors that cause hair loss. Only areas where hair will remain growing for the lifetime of the patient should be designated donor areas.
The medical team transplant these individual hair follicles to the transplant areas. They perform the same way in their new location as they would have in the donor area. This means that these former balding/bald areas now produce hair. Therefore FUE Hair transplants are permanent solutions, so long as the transplanted follicles were resistant to hair loss.
FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction. It is an adaptation of the original method called Follicular Unit Transplantation (F.U.T.). FUT hair transplants are better known as “the strip method”.
Medical staff harvest a strip of scalp from the donor area in an FUT hair transplant. Technicians then dissect the strip under a microscope to isolate the individual hair follicles. It is a slightly more painful method but more importantly it leaves a scar in the donor area of the patient.
FUE Hair Transplants were first described in 1988 by Masumi Inaba in Japan, who introduced the use of a 1-mm needle for extracting individual follicular units from the donor area. The benefits of FUE over FUT are
